in Milano.

by Kyungmin Hwang

Dolce & Gabbana presented their Fall/Winter 2026 Menswear Collection, “The Portrait of Man,” at Milan Fashion Week in January 2026. The show transcended the idea of a conventional collection, emerging instead as a manifesto exploring the identity and inner world of the modern man.

Dolce and Gabbana explained, "This show is a collection of the unique identity of every man such as a manifesto that places individuality at its core, where each man is conceived as a universe of his own, shaped by passions, memories and inner tensions.

The show’s introduction unfolded like a contemporary gallery of portraits, with each look expressed as a psychological yet sartorial self-portrait. Dolce and Gabbana want people to see the complexed feature of a manifesto that places individuality at its core, where each man is conceived as a universe of his own, shaped by passions, memories and inner tensions.

The Renaissance

The opening scene of the Dolce & Gabbana show borrowed from the chiaroscuro of the Renaissance, creating a design where light and shadow sculpturally chiselled shapes.

Furthermore, the pocket watches featured throughout the looks also incorporated Renaissance elements. During the Renaissance, pocket watches were a symbol of great wealth, and their display was crucial. The Renaissance was a period in which Italy achieved significant economic growth through trade and became a leader in culture, art, and the humanities. Milan's growth was particularly notable. This economic prosperity fueled scientific advancements, and as scientific artifacts, once reserved for large square clocks, were transferred to portable pocket watches, transforming the pocket watch into a symbol of great wealth. Because they were so expensive, they were typically worn on the waist or worn as a necklace, rather than hidden away in a pocket.

From the 1990s to today

The codes that have defined the brand’s style from the 1990s to today take center stage, recalling an immediately recognizable masculine essence. This is reflected in the cast of models — an authentic expression of Dolce&Gabbana’s aesthetic — as well as in the design of each piece and in the interplay of contrasts that shapes selected looks.

Behind every look, it seems, is a message that it is okay to go beyond tradition and uniformity and find or express your own individuality and true self.

Tailoring plays a fundamental role, not as a rigid code but as a tool of expression. how?

'Shoulders define character; constructions reveal intention; fabrics and textures speak of memory and presence. From deep velvets to compact wools, from matte silks to contemporary brocades, each material reflects a different way of inhabiting the world. A tailored touch runs through many of the runway looks, taking on different nuances and meanings depending on the pairings and on the masculine portrait being represented.
